Rule #1 - First Impressions DO count!

A website can have great content and various resources which the user may in actual fact be looking for. However, if not designed appropriately towards its target audience a homepage can lead to disastrous results. The homepage dictates the users next move within seconds, if the user doesn't like what they see they'll simply click the 'Back' Button to go back to Google and find another website (there are plenty of competing websites out there).

Using traffic statistics the owners were able to realise that there was a high bounce rate, anyone who entered the site was immediately put off by the front page leading to a massive 70% bounce rate. Since it's launch, the new website has been achieve remarkable improvements. With an average of 88 hits per day, the bounce rate has dropped to below 17%.

The bounce rate is down to users closing or navigating away from the homepage without clicking any other links on the site. The homepage must entice users to explore further and carry out an action, be it an enquiry via email or by phone, or placing an order online.

Rule #2 - Having a site that people can use!

Aesthetics leave a lasting impression, however they must not get in the way of functionality and usability. the organisation and layout of content including information, links and media must be displayed as such that each page defines/provides the users' next point of action.

The website was originally designed by Website Promotions a year ago, since then Old Mill Apartments grew from a 3 apartments small venture to a business that owns 5 apartments but also manages 5 cottages in Yarm, a Bed & Breakfast in Stockton and 3 apartments in Darlington.

The website was becoming confusing and more difficult to use as the business grew and the customer base expanded with traffic now at approx. 1200 hits per month. the new website made way for a new user interface with a more interactive bookings calendar and featured links.
